In the Valley Below wsg Less is More, The Class Acts ($12adv/$14dos)
n The Valley Below’s debut album, The Belt, is a mysterious, mesmerized and relentlessly melodic record that bares powerful tales of lust, loss and faith like open wounds, while hinting at hidden meanings. Opening with “Peaches”, it also births the huge, hands-aloft hooks of “Neverminders” and “Stand Up”. The deliciously lingering deathbed farewell of “Hymnal” and lived-in, love-in nostalgia of “Take Me Back” lend a throbbing urgency to the insistent, intravenously wanton “Palm Tree Fire”. Self-written and produced, two of The Belt’s 11 songs were also mixed by Gail and Jacob, with others handled by John Congleton (St. Vincent, David Byrne), Pete Min (Airborne Toxic Event), Lasse Mårtén (Lykke Li, Peter, Bjorn & John), and Dave Sardy (Oasis, Band of Horses). Personified by “Peaches”’ sunlight-through-the-eyelids abandon and cult-ish caress, The Belt is that most elusive of records: arcane, authentic, and effortlessly resonant across cultures and eras. Though the duo’s bond is uniquely theirs, we are all In The Valley Below.

Kalamazoo Academy of Rock Annual Benefit ($5)
The Kalamazoo Academy of Rock presents it's annual benefit show at Bell's on Sunday, February 21. Show time is 12:30pm. A $5 contribution is suggested. This year the benefit cause is the iconic Gibson smokestack. As many of you know, Gibson Guitar Corp. was founded right here in Kalamazoo and built guitars here until they moved to Nashville in 1985. The original 1917 building still stands at 225 Parsons St. (five blocks north of Bell's Eccentric Cafe). The smokestack with G-I-B-S-O-N spelled along it's 70 ft. height still stands, too - but barely. It is badly in need of reconstruction and an effort to raise money in order to save it is underway. This is an important piece of history: for Kalamazoo and for music lovers everywhere. Virtually any great guitarist you can name has played a Gibson made under The Stack! The Kalamazoo Academy of Rock is an organization of six bands of young musicians aged 8 - 18. Each band rehearses once/week and members get a 45 minute private lesson from a specialist on their instrument. Players from beginners to more advanced are welcomed! www.kalamazooacademyofrock.com KAR has it's band room in the former Gibson building and is very involved in the effort to "Save the Stack", which stands about 100 ft. from where they rehearse!

Super Happy Funtime Burlesque ($10)
Utterly unique and unclassifiable; Super Happy Funtime Burlesque is all at once a live band, an original work of musical theater, a comedy show, a bawdy and sexy burlesque production, a giant ball of chaos rolled up into one neat little production that has been leaving jaws on the floor for nearly a decade. Defying the odds, this 12 member production plays nearly 100 shows a year around the nation. Designed to find your line and cross it, SHFB fancifully and musically deconstructs taboos and convention; making light of politics, the sexes, and religion using original music that backs up a cast of playful and beautiful burlesque dancers.

The Mainstays are a funk & soul band based in Kalamazoo, MI. Featuring Andrew Schrock (singer/songwriter), Dutch Conway (bass), and Nate Heymoss (guitar) of Michigan's funk/dance band Funktion, the band draws heavily from the groovy elements that made Funktion a bonafide dance party, while crafting dynamic, insightful, and almost folk-influenced songs. Half-beast/Half-man Paul Bauer behind the drum kit and the downright dirty playing of Tom McRockin Eldred (BMF Band) on keys bring the sound fully together, and provide that elusive answer to your missed connection.

Rangda wsg Forget the Times ($12adv/$15dos)
Rangda is the kind of group that clued-in music snobs can only dream of forming. At its core is the twin virtuoso guitar attack of Richard Bishop, of the sorely missed Sun City Girls and his own instructive solo recordings, and Ben Chasny, the man behind the Six Organs of Admittance moniker, and a member of Comets on Fire and numerous other musical formations. The lineup is rounded out by drummer Chris Corsano, who has worked with everyone from Bjork to Jandek to legendary British free-jazz saxophonist Evan Parker. After circling the idea for years, the three finally halted their schedules in order to record their first record, False Flag, which was released by Drag City in 2010. This was followed in 2012 by their second album, Formerly Extinct (also on Drag City). Since then they have released a live 10” record (Rangda Live in Krefeld) on Germany’s Unrock label, and a split LP with The Dead C on Ba Da Bing! Bishop, Chasny and Corsano bring decades of experience to the collective table. It is estimated that they’ve appeared on over 400 albums between the three of them. The knowledge each has gained from working as solo performers, as well as with others, allows them to effortlessly move freely as a unit, engaging themselves in improvisational blow-outs, extended psychedelic explorations, odd-metered compositions, and anything else that is required. Rangda have recently recorded their third full-length record which will be released by Drag City in early 2016.

Lucero wsg John Moreland ($22adv/$25dos)
You could say we were one of the lucky ones, starting this band in April of ’98 without a clue as to what we were doing. We were getting tired of the steady punk rock and metal diet and we wanted to try our hand at country songs, or do our best Tom Waits/Pogues impersonation. The trick there was that we couldn’t really play our instruments! I had never played guitar before and Ben Nichols (lead singer, guitar) had only played bass in other bands. Finding Roy Berry (drummer) and John C. Stubblefield (bassist) solidified the line up and being hidden away in Memphis allowed us to woodshed, experiment with different sounds and create one that was ours alone. Eventually we got out of town, and playing 250 shows year not only made us tight as a band but as a family as well. We are still one of the few bands out there with the original line up from almost the beginning, and it shows.
