Composting allows Bell's Eccentric Cafe to reduce waste stream by 200 pounds of kitchen scraps a week

Laura Potter | Bell's Brewery, Inc.

Composters.JPGReducing our waste stream is part of our ongoing sustainability efforts here at Bell’s.

And with a new partnership this summer, we will be able to divert kitchen waste from our pub, the Eccentric Café, to active composters inside the Common Ground Community Garden, also located here in Kalamazoo.

The Common Ground garden is a collaboration between Fair Food Matters, the Kalamazoo County Land Bank, Kalamazoo County MSU Extension/Master Gardeners and the Kalamazoo Nature Center

The program is designed to support community garden projects throughout Kalamazoo County, with a special emphasis on those that serve low-income and food-insecure residents.

By utilizing the space at Common Grounds, we will be able to transfer approximately 200 pounds of kitchen scraps per week, and after about two weeks of turning the compost it will be ready to add to the soil.

Anyone, whether you live in a house or apartment, can compost. It’s easy!

The type of food scraps that can go into a compost pile are fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, and even shredded newspaper and lawn waste, like grass clippings or leaves.

You will want to avoid any sort of meat products, fish, oil, peanut butter or pet waste.

The process can be as simple as you want it to be. Regular turning, or aeration, ample water, and the right ratio of carbon to nitrogen, will speed up the process for usable compost.  With aeration just once a month or even once a summer, you can compost with very little effort. Whichever method you choose, composting is a great way to reduce waste while creating amendments for your soil.

For those interested in learning more, Common Ground plans to eventually add composting classes for the public.
