The B-Side Sessions are back for a 4th season! Almost all musicians know they want to run their musical endeavors through a formal company. However, most people have questions about which legal entity is best for them and how to go about getting one set up. This workshop is for those folks.
Chris Newberg, a Michigan based business lawyer and entertainer, will offer some insight on the various business entities available to musicians and how to work through the process of getting yourself officially “in business.” Step-by-step, Chris will walk through the entire process of filing for a Michigan LLC, getting an Employee Identification Number (EIN), and putting together an operating agreement. With these three things, you’ll have a properly formed and operation business to use for years to come.
You will learn:
The pros and cons of different business entities (LLC, s-corp, etc.) and why an LLC is typically the best for musicians
Understanding and creating operating agreements as a solo artist or band
How to go into business with bandmates/partners
What an EIN is and how to get one
Whether to DBA and how to get one
How to set up a business bank account
The basics of business taxes and bookkeeping
This is your sign to start the new year off right. Take advantage of free advice from experienced professionals. This workshop will be led by a business attorney and an artist development consultant, both of whom have experience helping musical entrepreneurs.
