This summer, we’re spending more time on the trail as part of our Two Hearted Trail Pledge Program. We asked some coworkers who hike for some tips on how we can up our game, and here’s what they shared.
Extra Coffee: When you’re heading out for a hike, some coffee in an insulated thermos can be your friend. It can help give you some energy to start your hike off on the right foot.
Bug Spray: Bugs are good for the environment, but not on our skin. Keep them at bay by packing bug spray in your backpack, it’s always good to bring some extra in case you realize you missed a spot.
Pack Snacks: Hiking can work up an appetite, and to keep yourself fueled, bring extra snacks. A mix of energizing nuts, fruits, and granola bars can keep energy levels up and your taste buds happy.
Pack Extra Socks: Few things can ruin a hike faster than wet and uncomfortable feet. Even if you don’t anticipate getting wet, rain may suddenly come, or you may have to walk through wet terrain. Pack an extra pair of socks, you might find yourself in a situation where you’re happy you did.
Take Time to Soak in the Outdoors: As you hike, take a moment to pause and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the sounds of the wilderness, and appreciate the stunning views. As the wise person once said: it’s the journey, not the destination.
Turn Your Phone on Airplane Mode and Download Maps: Tech tip: While it’s essential to have your phone for emergencies and navigation, preserve battery life and stay focused on the experience by switching to Airplane mode. If you are in an area with poor reception, your phone will use extra battery trying to find a tower to connect to. Also, download offline maps to ensure you can find your way even without a stable internet connection.
Pack Comfortable Shoes for When You’re Done: After a hike, your feet will thank you for slipping into a pair of comfortable shoes. It’s a small luxury, but it’s nice to get out of whatever shoes you wore for miles on the trail. Help stop the spread of invasive species by brushing off your shoes at the trailhead before putting them away for your next adventure.
Bring a Bag to Clean Up Trash: It’s always good to bring an extra bag or two to collect any trash you may see on the trail. Every little bit helps.
Have fun on the trail and consider volunteering to help keep our trails a beautiful and natural place to visit. Also, don’t forget to have a tasty beverage — maybe a Two Hearted IPA — cooled down for when you get back.
