What’s the midnight sun?
Each year around the summer solstice (June 21), Iceland experiences the natural phenomenon of the “midnight sun,” where the sun doesn’t set until just before midnight. During this time, the brightness of the midnight sun shines for nearly 24 hours! This dazzling event occurs because the Earth’s axis tilts towards the sun in summer, allowing it to appear is if the sun doesn’t set for a few months out of the year in Iceland.
Opposite of the total darkness of “polar nights” during the winter, people travel from all over the world to experience the midnight sun and celebrate the longest, most vibrant days of the year.
